The process of Configuring:
Terminological Parallels
[These parallels continue to shift; the chart is a heuristic.]
| DILTHEY | PROCESS | OPERATION | ELEMENTS |
| Nachbild | recalling [sensory imput activates retreiving "scripts" | retreiving | memory system(s) |
| Ausdruck | recognizing [imput is compared to past scripts and matched.] | comparing, scanning |
|
| Füling | identifying [in matching scripts, perspective emerges] | focusing, foregrounding, backgrounding,
highlighting, emoting, feeling |
perspective/highlighting foreground / background |
| Nachbilt | framing [the activated frames provide mental spaces for re-structuring] | imposing mental
spaces, , structuring schematizing |
metaphor |
| Nachlebe | imagining to restructure the "scripts" | (composing), selecting, assembling, typifying, recruiting, visualizing | visual memory |
| Schichhin-einversetzen | transposing (experience transfer) [in the blended space, the "narrator" shifts position & perspective] | transferring /transforming, | |
| Einfüling | projecting [the blended space is matched to the imputs & the blend is run] | elaborating | blend |
| Weltanschauung | believing [running the blend > disposition] | episodic memory |
Additional Parallels from Cognitive Linguistics and Pyschology
| MY TERMS | COG. LING. | COG. PSYCH. | other rel terms | DILTHEY |
| recalling | knowledge base | memory system(s) | mental image | Nachbild |
| recognizing | comparing, (partial mapping), typing | perception of expression | Ausdruck | |
| feeling (identifying) | perspective/highlighting | selecting (evaluating) | Füling | |
| structuring (framing) | imposing mental spaces (metaphor) | Struktur | ||
| imagining | imagining (blending mental spaces) | visual memory imagining |
visualizing, assembling, |
Nachlebe |
| transposing (experience transfer) | transfer (composing?), /transformation | concept tansfer & | Schichhineinversetzen | |
| projecting | framing, structuring, elaborating | schematizing | empathy as "in another's shoes" | Einfüling (?) |
| belief system | world view | episodic memory | Weltanschauung |
Additional Parallels from the Point of View of Cognitive Abilities
| DESCRIPT REGISTERS (VOCABULARIES) | COMPUTATIONAL COGNITIVE ABILITY |
PROCEDURAL | IMPLEMENTATIONAL |
| RECALLING | a cognitive operation that retreives episodic data from memory | the process or pattern of processes | neurological conditions (MAKEUP) |
| RECOGNIZING | a cog operation that compares the sensory imput to past imputs (data) to scan for matching features of remembered episodes | scanning the data in terms of narrative units, i.e., "reliving" an exp. which generates feelings | |
| IDENTIFYING | a cog operation that focuses (positions) the narrator {to recall assoicated episodes} | has perspective & scans additional episodes which generates additional feelings | |
| FRAMING | a cog operation that structures the sensory input in accord with the network of frames | sets up a network of relations | |
| IMAGINING | a cog operation that adapts the remembered features of the type of episode to accommodate the imput [and then to reverse its perspective] | re-assemling features of remembered episodes | |
| TRANSPOSING | a cog operation that reverses the position of the narrator in the narration. | if motivated,* alters perspective and re-scans | |
| PROJECTING | a cog operation that activates the episodic "background" (mental networks of frames) | as the scanning proceeds, cog networks are activated. | |
| BELIEVING | a cog operation that disposes the narrator to act | Given past dispositions, certain aspects of episodes activate them virtually. | |
desiring MOTIVATING* |
a cog operation that desires a specific outcome | Given past values, narrator desires a particular outcome of a possible act virtually |
*"normal" desiring is dependent on belief and value system. So, if you want
justice for the underprivileged, you would be pre-disposed to transpose your
perspective in VH. However, the null experience factor has to be entered into
the equation. The example from the transgendered woman about feeling cold.
Having heard about it from her, I can only imagine the experience. But there
is a huge difference if I simply conceive of the idea and if I visualize and
relivng analogous experiences. The problem is that generally I would not desire
to have a null experience unless the persons undergoing it had an advantage
over me, e.g., passing.
