signify/signification |
Working Definition:
to arrange signs to create meaning
Disciplinary Definitions:
"For a long time it has been observed that there is an important difference between the sign itself and the particular use to which it may be put: Peirce thus opposed the type and the token ... The total number of words in a text gives us the number of tokens; the total number of different words give us the number of types.
Finally, entering into a sentence, the token undergoes internal modifications: it can combine with certain signs and not with others; furthermore, these combinations are different in nature. We can call signifying capacity this aspect of the sign that allows it to enter into discourse and to combine with other signs." Ducrot and Todorov,
Encyclopedic Dictionary of the Sciences of Language. 105
Comments:
Seems to be the linguistic correlative to representing/representation.
