pre-text |
Working Definition:
All that exists prior to the communication in the cognitive frameworks of the senders and receivers of texts, including their knowledge of sign-systems, which is a pre-condition of that communication.
Disciplinary Definitions:
Since I coined the term, there is no disciplinary definition other than mine. Traditionally, "code" is the communication component I am replacing with the term "pretext." The reason for the change has to do with developments in Cognitive Linguistics. For example, "frameworks."
Comments:
The term "pretext" not only fits nicely with the terms "text" and "context" implying a close relationship among these components but it also is a broad term that can include terms such as "codes," "frames," "dispositions," etc.
