conflict

Working Definition:

A state of antagonism between persons, parties, or governments.

Disciplinary Definitions:

dramatic conflict: "The ancients compared the plot of a drama to the typing and untying of a knot. The principle of dramatic conflict, though not mentioned as such in Aristotle's definition of drama, is implied in this figure. The technical structure of a serius play is determined by the necessities of developing this dramatic conflict." Harmon, Holman, A Handbook to Literature

Villainy: "The viallain causes harm or injury to" a person. Propp, Morphology of the Folktale.

"The difficulties participants [in narratives] experience in trying to accomplish [goal directed] plans —whether because of overambitious goals, erroneous befliefs, unpredicted obstacles, conflicting plans hatched by other participants, mutually inconsistent descires, or other problems—confer on sequences the noteworthiness or tellability distinguishing a story from a stereotype. Action structure are mental models of such participant oriented patterns of effort, conflict, trouble, and, in some cases at least, resolution of conflict and oercoming of trouble." Herman, Story Logic, 90-91.
